Ringtones
Ringtones and ringback tones
Ringtones comprise monophonic, polyphonic and recording-based ringtones (real tones) and ringback tones. Ringtones typically last between 30 and 45 seconds. Ringtones may also be combinations of sound and image, or ‘video ringtones’.
The ringtone provide signs an agreement with Teosto and regularly reports on downloading numbers and which songs the ringtones are based on.

For real tones and video ringtones, you will also need a licence from Gramex and the relevant record companies.
The service provider also pays Teosto a royalty on product packages containing music and on monthly fees paid by consumers.
Some creators of music have specifically excluded their works from being used as ringtones. Check the exclusion list at the NCB website.
