Teosto distributed €16.2 million to music authors and publishers in September

Teosto distributes royalties to its members quarterly In September 2026, the payments primarily covered music performed between January and March 2026 on radio, television, web services and streaming services, as well as background music.

In September 2026, €2.4 million more in royalties were distributed than a year earlier. In total, almost 6300 authors and publishers will receive payments in September. The median payment per individual author in this distribution was approximately €94.

We have received some inquiries from our customers regarding the performances included in the distribution and the amounts distributed. We are currently reviewing these observations and will provide further information if necessary. If any deficiencies are identified in the distribution, they will be corrected as soon as possible.

Strong growth in Online royalties due to faster distribution schedules

The strong growth in online services is mainly due to the fact that last year’s substantial Netflix distribution was postponed from September to December. This year, these royalties are being distributed in September. Overall, royalties from online services level with last year.

The decrease in public performance royalties and the increase in the Radio and TV category are due to a change in how the royalties are processed. Previously, royalties collected from operators using radio as background music were treated as ‘background music based on radio broadcasts’ under public performance. These royalties are now allocated directly to radio stations in proportion to their listening figures, and are therefore shown as an increase in the Radio and TV category.

The royalties to be distributed in September 2026 have been collected for the following categories of rights:

Distributions are made four times a year

Teosto distributes royalties to its member composers, lyricists, arrangers and publishers four times a year. After September 2026, the next distribution will be paid on 14 December 2026.

The total amount distributed by Teosto varies depending on how comprehensively royalties can be collected in each music use category and how quickly the royalties can be allocated to the work to which they belong.

The allocating of royalties requires work notifications submitted by music creators to Teosto for their own works, as well as performance notifications or music use reports submitted by music performers and users.
