Today, 14 September, Teosto has paid a total of EUR 15 million to composers, lyricists, arrangers and music publishers. Of the total, EUR 6.1 million was paid to Teosto’s Finnish members. The rest of the money was paid to foreign authors and publishers through international organisations. In total, more than 6 500 music authors and publishers received royalties in September.

Teosto makes distributions once every quarter. The royalties in this distribution are for music used in concerts, on radio and television, as background music, in online and streaming services, and in Yle Areena and the Nelonen Ruutu+/Ruutu services, mainly during the first quarter of 2023.

The amount distributed to an individual author may range from a few euros to thousands of euros, depending on how many times their work has been performed and their share of the work. In this distribution, the median amount distributed to a single music author was about EUR 100.

More detailed information about the distribution categories included in this distribution and the collection periods for royalties can be found in the 2023 distribution calendar.

Teosto’s September 2023 distribution is EUR 1.7 million larger than the September 2022 distribution

The larger total distribution is mainly due to the larger distribution amount from Video on Demand services, which is EUR 1.5 million more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In September last year, only Netflix royalties were distributed, while this year’s September distribution includes royalties collected not only from Netflix but also from Amazon, Elisa Viihde, HBO and Viaplay.

The amounts of public performance royalties from concerts and the event licence category, as well as radio-based background music royalties, are also larger than in September 2022.

The royalties paid in September 2023 were collected for the following categories of rights:

Category of rights September 2023 EUR mil. September 2022 EUR mil.
Radio and TV 5.4 5.6
Public performance 1.8 1.5
Online services 5.6 4.2
Multiple (foreign countries, corrections) 2.2 2.0
Total 15.0 13.3

Distributions are made four times a year

You can find out more about Teosto’s distributions on the Distributions page

The total amount distributed by Teosto varies, depending on how comprehensively royalties can be collected in each music use category, and how quickly these can be allocated to the work to which they belong. Allocating royalties requires work notifications submitted by music authors to Teosto for their own works, as well as performance notifications or music use reports submitted by music performers and users.

Teosto distributes royalties to its member composers, lyricists, arrangers and publishers four times a year. After September 2023, the next distribution will be made on 14 December 2023.
